Giselle

Oct 24, 2022–Ballet during the holidays is about more than the Nutcracker, a point Enrica Tseng hopes to prove with Ballet Frontier’s presentation of Giselle at the Cailloux Theater on Sunday, November 6.

Tseng is Artistic Advisor of Ballet Frontier, an internationally-recognized premier classical ballet company based in Fort Worth.

“Yes, the Nutcracker has become a very popular ballet, but there are many more beautiful ballets such as Giselle, with as much beauty and more depth,” Tseng said. “This is the best romantic ballet you may ever witness.”

It will be a full scale, professional company, with 40 dancers wearing brand new costumes. The company comprises three levels of dancers–members, apprentices, and trainees, some as young as 16.

Giselle is described as a “ghost-filled ballet that tells the tragic, romantic story of a beautiful young peasant girl named Giselle and a disguised nobleman who fall in love.” The production creates an “ethereal atmosphere” with flowing costumes and varied color palette, using original choreography.

In order to help audiences appreciate what may be a new piece for them, a speaker will introduce the show and explain the significance of what the audience will see.

“There is a lot of pantomiming ballet, so we will share the movements and meanings so the audience will better understand what is happening,” she said. “It is an iconic ballet, with choreography first used in 1842. Yet it is about love, so it feels very contemporary. That is why it has lasted so long–everyone can relate to it.”

It has been several years since any professional ballet company has performed in the area, so Tseng is looking forward to expanding their art to communities such as Kerrville.

“I feel like the whole state is growing so much, and the arts need to be part of that growth,” she said. “One reason we contacted the Cailloux Theater was because we knew Kerrville had a symphony.”

She hopes those fans who love the Nutcracker will come out to experience something different for these holidays.

“There is nothing like experiencing a live performance,” she said. “This will really touch your heart. When you go to a museum, you can view beautiful paintings. With Giselle, it is like a beautiful painting, but the painting is moving. We hope everyone will come out.”
